Final Draft Mobile App Reviews

Stability issues

the iPad version still crashes from time to time, making me lose hours of hard wrought labor, stuff never to be ressurected again. Please, update this product so it can actually fuction as a writers app.

Slow typing on iPad.

Theres a serious lag with the keyboard on the app now. Started recently with the app on my iPad.

Doesnt save to iCloud Drive

Hmmm... Apple app...no iCloud support. DropBox support is good for sharing among colleagues in a pinch, but when Im working, iCloud is my preferred means of sharing, especially between my own devices. For such an expensive product, this should come with that support. Ill change my review if the app updates its standards.

Useful elegant intuitive

An ideal mobile solution for quickly sketching scenes or capturing dialogue before transfer to the desktop version of Final Draft. One-click setup with a Dropbox account couldnt be easier, but, you can also email yourself backups, even Select All of your script (or just a portion of text), then copy and paste your selection into Evernote. One star reviews here are insincere. Each new (free) update purges all prior reviews. Competitors then repopulate this apps Reviews section with bizarre single stars. If you appreciate the app and notice it has been updated, please consider refreshing your positive review to protect our investment in this unique useful program. Writer is of course optimized for the iPhone 6/6+...it looks gorgeous, feels intuitive, and like most professional iOS apps is extremely stable. There simply is no competition. Highly recommend Writer for sketching and editing on the fly. Youll love it.

Okay for screenplays - terrible for stage plays

Ive been using final draft since version 4.x on floppy disks, over 20 years ago. Final draft in someways gets better, and like Microsoft Word since version 5.x, just gets messier and bloated. Final draft for i-devices works reasonably well for screenplays, not perfectly. Lots of glitches, bugs, and club lines. ...But I also write stageplays, and all it does is copy the exact same functions from the screenplay file. Even uses the SAME TERMS AS A SCREENPLAY! Thats ridiculous. There are no "shots" in a stageplay. Or "scene headings" and so forth. Stageplays require different formatting and different elements, and its very disappointing that final draft for i-devices and desktop claims to be for stageplays, and then just uses the exact same screenplay functions and names. This makes writing a stageplay impossible without customizing, when final draft should have already customized it for you - like it claims it does - and even then you are still left with standard screenplay terms NOT USEABLE FOR STAGE. Its not very pretty to write on, very clunky at times; other software are prettier, but SADLY final draft does happen to be more functional than all the other software Ive tried. Including Celtx and Scripts Pro. Also when you sync, if you delete a file from the app, it still remains in your dropbox, so you can accidentally have multiple files when you thought you deleted it, and this can be confusing.

Still Some Glitches

I enjoy the ease of using Final Draft, in where its connected to my desktop, iPad, and iPhone. There was a recent update where Im finding it more difficult for all of my devices to sync together. Also, it seems like the copy/paste function isnt working properly on the iPad. For some reason, the pop-up to copy/paste doesnt show anymore, so I have to rely on my iPhone and/or desktop to move scenes around.

Great screenwriters app

I really like FD above all other screenwriting apps, but there are some minor irritations with the mobile version: 1. Limited to US dictionary 2. No watermarking when sharing 3. No link to iCloud 4. Major issues when editing/creating the title page. Otherwise, the UI is great, easy to understand and a very intuitive design. I have always, and will always use Final Draft.

Needs work

Its great that I can open, edit and create FDX documents on my iPad, but the experience could really be improved. First, the app uses a terrible custom scrolling engine it seems, and it makes it impossible to highlight a sentence of text. Infuriating. The app doesnt support any keyboard shortcuts for the Apple Smart Keyboard, or any other Bluetooth keyboards, even basic ones for bolding, underlining or italicizing text. And the app has Dropbox support, which is nice, but still no support for iCloud Drive. Please update this app to take full advantage of modern iOS and iPad features! But please at least fix the terrible scrolling.

Options, options

For a mobile version, its sufficient. But I hate it that it only allows syncing via Dropbox. Its an Apple iPad, how about allowing AirDrop, or send it to a personal WIFI stick? I want security, along with mobility, and Dropbox is not it. Or, add a password option feature, or the ability to send the file to another App to add password. So until then, Ive wasted $20 on this suffocating APP.

Fix it, You Broke It

I almost didnt but I did and now I wish I hadnt. The update freezes, parenthetical locks up character heading is confusing... These simplest of functions are preventing me from knocking out a quick scene that I should be writing right now, instead of whining. Fix the sh*t. Please...

UPDATE on past review: some bugs fixed, now much more sluggish and other bugs found

Updated Review: The constant crashes have stopped which is great. New update is quite heavy compared to previous versions. Bug found where after entering CHARACTER and pressing Return once to go to DIALOGUE, the cursor jumps down as if Return were pressed twice. Also, the predictive spellcheck bar below is a nuisance as of now. Would be great to have the option to get rid of it. It also capitalizes the first letter of a word in the middle of a sentence if you backspace/delete. Sluggish type and heavy overall feel is a downgrade from previous versions. _____________________________________________ Previous review: Ive used this app for over a year. While the functions are easy and user-friendly, Ive dealt with constant CRASHES. Ive talked to FD Tech Support on three separate occasions but all they tell me to do is to send in the script thats crashing (its all of them) and then they tell me they cant replicate the issue so theres nothing they can do. If I were to do it over, I would not purchase this app but rather go with a free app like Celtx until this major issue is resolved. Update on another issue: up until v2.0.0, if you save to Dropbox, then work offline later and close the app without logging into the internet to update the Dropbox file, you will lose your offline work as FD will revert back to the last saved version on Dropbox! FD Tech says in the current version (2.0.1.) "that will no longer be an issue."

Could Be Better, But Ive Had No Problems

Obviously, writing anything on an iPhone is not ideal. However, this app is fairly easy enough to edit FDX documents on the go. Ive edited a number of my screenplays on here and had no problems. As a film student, this app is often a lifesaver for me.

New version almost unusable

The new version on a shiny new iPad Air 2 is laggy when typing with a keyboard, and even worse, freezes up almost always costing you the last page you wrote due to its infrequent saving. The simplest functions, like carriage return switching from character name to dialogue inexplicably goes from character name to action (what??) when it starts glitching. Have learned these small glitches are the harbinger of a freeze. I guess on the plus side it reminds me to stand up and take a break from looking at a screen every time it causes me to have to reboot the entire iPad to clear the memory leak.

Okay

This app is very buggy and hard to use. All the comments are fully supported in this review as well. This app should be easy and fun to use, especially if this company wants to port a computer port to a portable device like iPhones or iPads. This app is more hindering than helping and not worth the asking price of $15; come on do better than that guys, this app is a reflection of your company and it is shoddy work as of right now, pick up the game! I look forward to the best update that will make this product the go-to product for script writers around the world.

Dont bother

Final draft for your PC and Mac may be the final word in script writing software, but to say they dropped the ball on this mobile app is an understatement. In a world where mobile devices are running high graphic video games that cost a fraction of this app, why does a simple text based app have so many issues? I cant even email my scripts to my writing partner- it just doesnt work, rendering it useless and a waste of time. Save your money up and buy it for your computer but by all means avoid this app!

Crashes a lot

Two stars because of decent script writing features. Missing the other three stars because it crashes. It crashes a lot. It shouldnt crash at all for this price. And when it crashes you lose all work since the last exit/save.

Not ready for prime time

In short, this app has issues syncing with DropBox if you are also using the desktop version of Final Draft. Support replied in a timely fashion, but ultimately feels that the syncing issues are on DropBoxs end. On numerous occasions I overwrote my updated documents with old versions because the app syncs improperly. I have read all of the Final Draft Writer tutorials, and have replicated my problems on my iPhone and two iPads running the latest iOS versions. If you open the app to do some writing, then close the app completely, and then write more on your desktop, when you reopen the app, the latest changes are not reflected. Since many other mobile apps reflect syncing through DropBox, I am left to suspect that this app needs help in this capacity. For a $15 app, it should work flawlessly and like a dream, but it does not. The DropBox syncing between my desktop and my phone was a selling point for me. In principle, it should be simple and similar to other apps, but Im left with docs that dont sync properly, and a slew of backup files with the exact same filename as my script in my DropBox folder. Scripts Ive edited on my desktop have been overwritten by the phone version because they didnt sync when I opened them, and then closed the app, which overwrote them with an older version. This app is not ready for primetime and not worth the price I paid for it.

Genuinely impressed

Ive not used Final Draft in a few years because I disagree with pricing it so high and then charging for upgrades. Its a dated model, and there are many apps compatible with .fdx now. However, for iOS this is by far the best solution for one reason: pagination. You can see the pages as youre writing and you can have the confidence in knowing the page count is correct, which is the most important thing when it comes to screenwriting software. $15 is steep, yes, but I have to admit its been worth it. Ive only given three stars because of their syncing methods and a couple features that should really be included. I synced a file from desktop and opened it in Writer. Worked great, wrote about ten pages on a flight. However, when I connected to wifi to sync it, it synced the previous version back to the iPad, posing ten pages of work. Luckily, Writer store backups and I was able to get the pages back. The only way I can work offline now is by syncing the file using Dropbox, opening it in Writer, clicking in sync so it is a local file, making changes, then clicking sync and overwriting the original file in Dropbox. Please please please, Final Draft, please make it so that we can work offline and the app seamlessly updates the cloud version. Two more features would make this so much more worth the $15. First, please add support for iCloud Drive. This would make so many customer happy. Secondly, I would love to see index cards available on the Writer app. To be able to index card the entire screenplay, then begin writing from within the same app would be amazing. Scrivener are likely never going to release their iOS app, and having index cards on the iOS app would rally make me think again about buying the desktop software. Conclusion: fantastic for writing and revising screenplays. Dropbox syncing is a little unusual, and iCloud Drive would be appreciated. No index cards yet, so not the full solution for the writers journey. Story Skeleton is good for that, but being able to stay within the same app and FDX file would be wonderful.

Not sync with my cloud

Please dont spend your money in this application that force you to save everything in drop box and if you dont use that storage application you cant sync your scripts with your computer. Is 0% recommend if your are interesting in save time. Can be good if you only want to make notes when you dont ha ve your computer around. Is unreal that a well need application in the screen writers world; been limited to only sync with drop box (nothing against it, but i use other program) or e mail the scripts to yourself like we were on the 90s. Need improvement.

Broken

The functionality of this app is fundamentally broken. Files close without saving, Dropbox functionality has never worked properly, the design is less than intuitive, and lack of integration with iCloud Drive, OneDrive or Google Drive is just embarrassing.
